Every chair in this group of 22 is listed for patio use and for indoor use, so the same chair can serve the terrace in June and the dining room in January. Frames are mostly resin. Thirteen stack and nine have arms. Settle the stack count and the width before you settle the color.

One chair, two rooms

All 22 resin chairs carry both a patio listing and an indoor listing. That helps if your patio closes for the winter and the dining room can use extra seats, or if a banquet needs 40 chairs for one night and the patio stock is sitting in storage.

It also leaves three decisions: arms or none, stacking or not, and width. Make them in that order, because width is the one you fix last, once you know how many chairs go at each table.

Frames are resin on 20 chairs, aluminum on two and metal on one. Seats are resin on 21 and fabric on one. Prices run from about $65 to $384, a long spread, so sort by frame and seat before you sort by price.

Width, depth and the stack

Resin chairs vary in footprint more than you would guess. A mesh resin chair lists 17 3/4 inches wide, 21 deep and 32 1/2 tall. A resin dining chair lists 22 1/2 wide, 20 1/2 deep and 33 1/2 tall. Nearly five inches of width is the difference between a row that fits the wall and one that does not.

Thirteen chairs stack, which turns the end-of-season job into a stack, a cover and a spot against the wall. Nine have arms, and an armchair takes more table edge than a side chair, so count those separately in the plan.

Ten chairs list a seat height: six at 18 inches and four at 17 1/2. Pair those with a dining-height top and leave 10 to 12 inches of knee room under it.

What to do when the season ends

Listed for patio use is not a license to forget the chairs outside. Rinse them, let them drain, and stack or cover them before the first hard frost. Patio chairs carry a limited warranty of six months, and it excludes patio furniture that was left uncared for. The details are on the warranty page.

Want a different material? Faux rattan patio chairs look woven, and aluminum and steel patio chairs are the metal choice. For a table to match, try resin patio tables. The whole patio sits under patio chairs, and your count lives in patio plans.
