What a collection is, and is not

A category sorts by what a piece is. A collection sorts by how it looks or where it was meant to sit. That makes collections a good place to browse and a poor place to count, because a vintage bistro page can hold a chair, a stool and a table side by side. Open each listing, read what it is, and put it on the right line.

Looks that run through the shelf

Metal frames dominate, at 127 pieces, with wood on 53. Tolix-style frames are the most common style, on 52 pieces. Curved backs (24), upholstered backs (16) and ladder backs (15) trail behind. Wood seats number 96, vinyl 95 and fabric 72, with metal seats on 37 more, and 125 pieces offer upholstery options.

Indoors, and the few that go out

Indoor use is listed on 204 pieces and patio use on 43, so most of this page is dining-room furniture. Read the usage line before anything crosses the threshold to the terrace. Stacking is listed on 27 pieces and swivel on 14, and 18 listings show BIFMA certification; read the page for the piece you pick. Fifteen listings are sets, which count differently from singles. Open one and count the parts before you multiply. Say you are filling a 40-seat room: ten tables and forty chairs are fifty pieces of tables and chairs, well above the minimum order of 8 pieces, and each finish of each chair is a line of its own.

Prices for single pieces range from $67 to $979.

From a look to a category

When you have found the look, go to the category and count. The restaurant chairs and restaurant tables pages sort by what a piece is, which makes totals easy. Save the pieces you like to Patio plans and carry the combination into a reorder next spring.
